In the event of an emergency, the AVL application allows depot staff to view one or more buses on a GIS map.  This information can be used as a directional tool for guiding staff or emergency services to the exact location of a bus or in helping talk drivers back on route when they get lost.

Historical data stored within the application (typically 7 - 14 days) can be used to display a vehicle path in the event of a complaint, refund claim or accident.  This can also be used to confirm the bus number and driver at a certain time and location, e.g. if a bus was seen on the corner of x and y street at 3.30pm on Monday the 12th of Feb, who was driving? Another layer of information can be added to the map to show route paths and bus stop information.

The AVL application provides a window into a bus system and a tool that enhances the day to day operation of a bus depot.  Its use will improve operational efficiencies, save money and allow better resource utilisation.
